The reserve is characterized by a mosaic of lowland steppe, salt marsh and wetland ecosystems. The principal value of these natural resources is the only remaining population of Great Bustard (Otis tarda) in Serbia, on the southeastern edge of Central European Area. Great Bustard is on the world's Red List (IUCN Red List) of endangered species and is a strictly protected species in Serbia (Official Gazette 5/2010). Its habitat is the preserved typical Pannonian region, with distinctive plant communities and with flora and fauna, many of which are representatives of strictly protected species and species of importance to the protection of the international criteria.
